Some people inspire your career through what they achieve.
Others inspire you through the way they choose to help people.
When Pro Hair Magazine invited Jake to take part in their “My Hair Hero” feature, the choice was immediate: Stewart Roberts MBE, founder of Haircuts 4 Homeless.
It was an opportunity to sit down at No Bad Days and have an honest conversation about barbering, recovery, mental health, purpose, and the impact our industry can have.
A Conversation That Stayed With Me
Throughout the interview, Stewart shared experiences and perspectives that have stayed with Jake ever since.
Speaking about imposter syndrome, Stewart said:
“If you ever lose that feeling completely, something’s probably wrong.”
On recovery, he reflected:
“Recovery changed my life – without it, I probably wouldn’t even be alive.”
And when discussing the barbering industry, he shared:
“We’ve got to stop being so selfish. I love this industry, but a lot of it is self-promotion. There’s a hell of a lot of good people in it, but as a collective, we could do so much more.”
Why Stewart Is My Hair Hero
What Jake admires most isn’t simply what Stewart has achieved.
It’s that, despite everything, his focus has remained on helping other people.
That commitment to purpose continues to inspire the work being done at No Bad Days.
Barbering Is About More Than Hair
The conversation reinforced something we’ve believed from the beginning.
Barbering isn’t really about hair.
Hair is simply the vehicle.
It’s about confidence, connection and making people feel seen.
Those are exactly the kinds of conversations Jake hoped No Bad Days would create when it first began.
Thank You
A huge thank you to Pro Hair Magazine for the opportunity to take part in the feature, and to Stewart Roberts MBE for sharing his story so openly.
At the No Bad Days Project in Upnor, we believe that conversations around mental health in the barbershop can create meaningful connections. This was one of those conversations that will stay with us for a long time.
Thanks
NBD
